Charlotte Mason's most well-known teaching
method is probably her advocacy of using
"living books" instead of dry textbooks - which
are quite often comprised mainly of boring
facts.
Living books are generally historical fiction
or books written by a person who has a passion
for the subject and writes in a conversational
or narrative style. Charlotte believed that
children were intelligent enough to listen to
and read a wide range of high-quality books.
Charlotte coined the term "twaddle" to refer to
books that dumbed down and insulted the child's
intelligence.
Charlotte also advocated narration as a means
of helping children process and retain what
they have read and then restructure and share
what was read in an oral or written format
using his own words.
